Cocoa supplementation reduces amyloid-beta1–42 (Aβ1–42) induced deficits in a transgenic C. elegans

BACKGROUND: Cocoa, a significant contributor of polyphenols to the western diet has been shown be effective against Aβ induced toxicity in vitro. However, effects long-term cocoa supplementation on behavioural deficits, particularly short-term memory loss observed human AD are not well defined. OBJECTIVE: This study characterized phenotype pan-neuronal expressing C. elegans strain and investigated deficits including lifespan. METHODS: Cocoa powder was supplemented E. coli OP50 starting from L1 stage until they die. Neuronally controlled processes locomotion, learning were studied at different stages In addition, lifespan evaluated with doses. fibril levels determined Thioflavin T. RESULTS: worms showed reduced growth, maximum speed old age, middle age Cocoa-supplementation reversed speed, reach similar control counterparts while reducing levels.
